Tolkien's Ring (1994)

Illustrated by Allen Lee

  • A literary detective work about Tolkien's inspiration and sources showing how The Lord of the Rings is the result of an ancient story-telling tradition drawing upon the world's primary myths and legends to create his own mythology for the 20th century. To understand its significance, we understand how The Lord of the Rings is the result of an ancient story-telling tradition. Tolkien once described how the discovery of the Ring in an Orc cavern by Bilbo Baggins was as much of a surprise to the author as it was to his Hobbit hero. Just as his Wizard Gandalf sets out to discover the history of the Hobbit's Ring, so in this book we will search out the history and descent of Tolkien's Ring and how the Ring quest tradition first came into being among tribal peoples before written records were kept. Beautifully illustrated throughout by the creator of the Lord of the Rings movie sets, Alan Lee.
